Makes a change from reading the Obituaries...

Each time the honours list comes out I like to have a snoop through to see if anyone I like (or dislike) has got a gong.

Fairly thin gruel this year, but I was pleased to note that Major General Jonathan Bailey has been made a CB. I only know Major General Bailey by reputation, but it is a high reputation indeed. Not only has his military career been exceptional (he is the senior British officer in charge of the development of military doctrine) but he has is well known as a soldier scholar and has cut himself a niche as possibly the world's leading expert on gunnery and the development of artillery through the ages. Oh, and he wrote the chapter on the Great War in what is probably the best book on the military revolution debate available.

And they say there's only bad news around these days.
